During the New York Draft Riots of July 1863, members of the mob stormed the Colored Orphan Asylum stormed the building and burned it to the ground. Miraculously, the children who resided at the orphanaged were able to escape. During the remainder of the summer, Harper's Weekly published drawings and accounts of the violent chaos and its aftermath.
