On May 27, 2019, 113 years after the passing of Solomon Brown, the Institutions first African American employee, the Smithsonian regents named Lonnie Bunch, founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, as the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian. In the Institution's 173 history, Bunch is the first African American to hold this position.
